About Bickerstaffe Lodge

Bickerstaffe Lodge was opened in March 2011 and is operated by three directors as a not for profit organisation known as ‘Bickerstaffe Children’s Services Ltd’. The organisation was established in 2005 by the directors who where then parent governors of Bickerstaffe primary school. The directors identified a need for pre-school provision at Bickerstaffe school, and thus ‘Bickerstaffe Fledglings’ was born and began to operate morning sessions from the school hall. A short while later ‘Bickersplatts’ after school club was also incorporated into the business.

The Lodge is a brand new purpose built provision and is situated in the large peaceful rural grounds of the school.Grants and loans to build the provision were acquired following successful bid applications to various funding organisations. The directors, their families and members of staff from the school have all worked hard to get the provision up and running spending weekends and evenings digging, plumbing, building fences, sowing grass etc. We have also been very fortunate to receive help and generous donations from the community including the use of machinery, manpower, soil, grass seed etc, also local professionals offered their services for free. This truly is a building for the community built by the community.

The Lodge is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday (including school holidays) and is registered with Ofsted . Mrs Mercer (manager) and her fully qualified team are commited to providing good quality childcare both for the Fledglings children and the Bickersplatts children, providing a rich and varied curriculum personalised to the children within the setting. The services we provide are:

  • Bickerstaffe Fledglings which is our pre-school nursery for children aged 6 months to 4 years. We have the Willow room for our 6 months to 2 year olds and the Oak room for the 2 – 4 year olds. Operating all year round with government funded sessions available for 3 year olds during term time. We offer term time only spaces or year round spaces which can be attended either full or part time. Sessions available are from 3 hours to 10 hours.
  • Bickersplatts is our after school club which provides care during term time from 3.30pm to 6pm in the school hall and from 8am to 4pm in the school holidays in the Lodge for the children attending Bickerstaffe primary school.

Each day at the Lodge starts with our breakfast club open to both Fledglings and Bickersplatts from 8am to 9am. The Bickersplatts children are then escorted over to school having enjoyed a healthy and nutritious breakfast leaving the Fledglings (who very often do not want the older children to leave) to enjoy their activities. The Fledglings enjoy a three hour morning session which includes a snack break, self chosen and adult led activities both inside and out before tidying up ready to have lunch. The afternoon session commences at 1pm with some children leaving at either 3.15pm or 4pm depending on the sessions they have chosen.

All staff are fully qualified and highly experienced having obtained vocational qualifications and all take part in continuing professional development to ensure the very latest knowledge and practice is used in our setting. You can meet our staff by clicking here.
